The LGBT Flag is Staking Claim to Our Cities

I want to share a version of the letter I recently penned to the City of Woodstock regarding the appearance of the “Gay Pride” rainbow flag in Museum Square – our civic gathering place.

I am hoping that Christians and churches all across Canada will also express their views to their local “powers that be” on the raising of this flag over local city halls, police and fire stations, schools, etc. Please feel free to copy and adapt this letter as you see fit.

Your Worship the Mayor and City Council Members,

I am writing to you to voice my objection to our City flying the rainbow LGBT pride flag.

This flag represents a powerful, left-aligned political movement that focuses exclusively on the sexuality and sexual practices of a small minority of the population. Not only is it highly inappropriate for our City to push a particular brand of politics on its citizenry, it is highly offensive for the City to promote and advocate for particular sexual practices in public, especially aberrant ones. As former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau famously said, “there’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation.”

Furthermore, the LGBT movement, as represented by the rainbow flag, is vocal in its opposition to the traditional Christian beliefs of most of your constituents. Chai Feldblum, US Equal Opportunity Commissioner and LGBT activist tellingly comments: “Gays win, Christians lose.” For the City to stand in public solidarity with such a movement serves only to alienate all citizens with a traditional background and faith.

Christians assert that human sexuality, sex, and gender are governed by God. Deviating from His design for these in the manner in which the LGBT movement advocates is sinful. We do not want to see our City promoting sin and provoking the displeasure of Almighty God. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).

Therefore, in light of these concerns, I am requesting that you immediately remove the offensive rainbow LGBT pride flag and replace it with a flag that truly represents all of the people of our City – a local City flag.

Sincerely Yours,

David Cooke
